The story of the game strikes between the Star Ocean: The Second Story video game and the Star Ocean: Till the End of Time video game. This is the fifth edition of this Sci-fi role playing video game whose story is based on the second and third editions of the Star Ocean series. The story revolves around a protagonist who has been living on the Faykreed planet – an unknown planet, which is 6000 light years from earth. He has been thrown into a chaotic space. The story features many endings depending upon how the user chooses to play the game.

The main characters of the game are Fidel Camuze, Miki Sauvester – a fencer, Eden Riegel – heroine of the game, and Relia.

The user has the possibility to play as any of the seven players in the battle to control the game. The feature to switch between the characters is also there like its previous releases.
